Marshall, directed by Reginald Hudlin, is about the first African American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. To be more exact, the movie highlights a young Thurgood Marshall working as a NAACP lawyer.

While Thurgood Marshall was solving cases like Brown v. Board of Education, he was one of the defensive lawyers for the NAACP. He would travel state to state to help wrongly convicted black people in court.

One specific case that shifted his career tremendously was the case of a black man accused of taping and attempted murder of a white women. For this specific case, Marshall pairs up with civil attorney Samuel Friedman.

Marshall traveled to Connecticut to defend Joseph Spell, who is played by Sterling K. Brown, a black chauffeur who is accused of rape and attempted murder of his white female boss.   Marshall not only highlighted on the case that shaped their careers, but it also mentioned the social problems that were happening at this time period. When Marshall traveled to Connecticut, he was greeted by some guest, and by greeted he was actually harassed by a white supremacist who threatened his life.

Samuel Friedman, who was Jewish, also experienced some prejudices against him due to the case. In one scene after leaving the gym he was also attacked by a group of white supremacist just because he was defending a black man.

After this case both lawyers ended up doing extraordinary things. Friedman started to become an activist for civil rights and work closely with the NAACP. Thurgood Marshall later solved the Supreme Court case brown versus Board of Education and became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice.
