Best of the Best: Top Movies of 2022
Throughout 2022, directors and actors from all stages of life have given the world a plethora of movies that have helped us through the hardest times of this year! Records were broken and the boundaries of creativity were pushed as powerful messages were displayed on silver screens and TVs around the world. So, let’s round up a list of 10 movies that were the best of the best!
NOPE:
Director Jordan Peele is back at it again with this epic sci-fi horror film. The main characters Haywood Jr. and Emerald (portrayed by Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya) dive into the mysterious and terrifying world of aliens as the world around them changes. This film scored an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and high-praising reviews from movie critics and moviegoers worldwide. NOPE grossed over $123 million dollars at the box office this summer.
Don’t Worry Darling:
Though the drama within the casts filled headlines for weeks, this movie was incredibly entertaining with a galore of chemistry between the actors. The film follows Jack (Harry Styles) and Alice (Florence Pugh) in an idyllic ‘50s suburb called “Victory”. Every day is almost the same until a tragic event happens which alters Alice’s aspect of the community and the concept of the “Victory Project”. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 38%; contrary to the positive reactions from moviegoers. The film grossed $78 million at the box office.
The Gray Man:
In my opinion, The Gray Man is one of the most underrated movies of this year. This Netflix Original film stars Ryan Gosling as one of the CIA’s most skilled operative agents named “Six”. Once a mission goes wrong, Six is on the run from the CIA and former agent Lloyd Hansen, portrayed by Chris Evans. Though the action scenes were superb, the plot was only decent. Even though the film was rated a 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, it stayed number 1 on Netflix for weeks, thanks to millions of watchers.
The Batman:
The Dark Knight strikes again in another installment of the Batman franchise! Batman (Robert Pattinson) ventures into Gotham City’s underworld when a sadistic killer leaves behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, he must forge new relationships with Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), unmask the culprit, and brings justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the metropolis. Rotten Tomatoes rated this film certified fresh with a 85% and it grossed $370 million dollars at the box office.
Where the Crawdads Sing:
From the mind of Resse Witherspoon comes the heartbreaking journey of Kya Clark (Daisy Edgar-Jones), an abandoned young girl who raises herself in the Marshlands of North Carolina. Having been an outcast from her society for much of her life, she now becomes the lead suspect in the murder of her town’s golden boy. As the case unfolds, the story becomes not just a gut-wrenching tale of a girl with all odds stacked against her, it unravels into something much greater: a thoughtful commentary on society’s treatment of its rejects. Rotten Tomatoes rated the film a 34%; on contrary to the audience’s high praises and reviews as the movie grossed $90 million at the box office.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever:
“Yibambe ”, the country is back to enchant movie goers in the new edition to the franchise, Wakanda Forever. In the wake of the death of King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) now fight to protect the nation from intervening world powers. On top of that Namor (Tenoch Huerta), a new villain in the movie franchise, comes for revenge as he seeks resources and power for his underwater kingdom. I must say, you can definitely feel that there was a certain void due to the death of Chadwick Boseman, but the storyline was great! It definitely is tear-jerker (but we’re not spoilers over here!). Rotten Tomatoes rated this masterpiece certified fresh with a 84% and it continues to soar in box offices as it grosses $367 million dollars.
Elvis:
The King of Rock and Roll’s life-story is told in the film Elvis directed by Australian film director Baz Luhrmann. From his rise to fame to his unprecedented superstardom, Elivs Presley (Austin Butler) maintains a complicated relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). As he continues to smash music records for years, he strives to also maintain his family life with his wife Priscilla (Priscilla Presley). Rotten Tomatoes rated the film certified fresh with a 77% and audiences seemed to love the movie as much as them. Elvis grossed $151 million dollars at the box office.
Jurassic World: Dominion:
The Jurassic World franchise is back with another epic installment! Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live and hunt alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures. Actors Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neil return for the installment as Rotten Tomatoes rates the film a low 29%. Jurassic World Dominion grossed $376 million at the box office this summer.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:
Doctor Strange is back with more magic and traveling into various dimensions. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) teams up with a mysterious teenage girl, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), from his dreams who can travel across multiverses to battle multiple threats, including other-universe versions of himself, which threaten to wipe out millions across the multiverse. Rotten Tomatoes rated the film a 74% as it grossed $411 million dollars at the box office.
Top Gun: Maverick:
Soaring to the top of the box office list this year is the newest installment in the Top Gun franchise! After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruz) is back with more action. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it. And who can’t forget everyone’s favorite pilot Rooster, played by Miles Teller in the film? Rotten Tomatoes rated the film certified fresh with a whopping 96% as it grossed $716 million dollars at the box office.
Can’t wait for the upcoming year and all that is scheduled to be shared out of Hollywood!
