We all see that pack of bubble gum at the cashier. You can’t go wrong with it. 

     Bubblegum itself has a variety of flavors, such as strawberry or blue raspberry. But what is the actual flavor of bubble gum? Bubble gum typically tastes like a fruit punch of different fruits, and most say it’s made with strawberry, banana, and cherry. Some say there may be some orange and lemon flavoring in there. Anyways, now we know what’s in bubble gum flavoring. 

     The first bubble gum company, Dubble Bubble, is still up and running to this day.. They created the color of bubble gum pink, still leaving it to be pink now. The reason for this was because there was no other food coloring in the factory other than pink. So, when Walter Diemer finally re-made his recipe for bubble gum, it turned out to be a gray color, which looked unsettling. Personally, I think pink still suits the flavor of bubble gum, even if it was an accident. 

     Bubble gum is one of the staple candies in a candy shop. If you’re ever walking into one, there’s no doubt that it’d be somewhere in the store. What made bubble gum so popular though? While Diemer was making his bubble gum and testing out new recipes, he noticed that his bubble gum was less sticky than normal bubble gum (as in sticks of gum back in the 1920s’), and it was actually more stretchy than your average stick of gum. Because of these two aspects, bubble gum grew in popularity and was very successful.

     Another successful brand is Bazooka Gum. This bubble gum brand was introduced in 1947, and was first sold after World War 2. During their time, the bubble gum was one penny, just like Dubble Bubble originally did. Bazooka became a popular company because of their comic strip wrapper. If you open a piece of gum, don’t be shocked to see “Bazooka Joe” in your wrapper! Their original flavor is their most long-lasting, and it also has a punch of taste when you chew some of it.

     Did you know that Bazooka Gum isn’t only popular in the U.S? The company sells their gum in other countries, changing it to the most widely spoken language in that country. In Canada, they’re able to change it both to English and French, depending on where they’re selling their gum. In Spain, it was sold under a different name (chicle bazooka) which means Bazooka Gum. They started selling it around the 60s’, and it has been thriving ever since. 

     That’s the history of what bubblegum is and what it’s made of. So, if you see a pack of Bazooka or Dubble Bubble at your local grocery store, now you know where it came from and how long it’s been around for!
