‘New Girl’ is Leaving Netflix
Once again, Netflix is removing a masterpiece. So far we’ve lost Vampire Diaries, ‘The Office’, ‘Friends’, ‘Glee’, and many others. Netflix’s newest victim is ‘New Girl’. For this reporter, April 9th marked the end of her Netflix subscription, and she urges you to do the same.
Written by Elizabeth Hughes Meriwether, ‘New Girl’ (2011) is a seven-season sitcom that stars Jessica Day (played by Zooey Deshcanel), a quirky teacher who moves into an LA loft with three men: Nick (Jake Johnson), Winston (Lamorne Morris), and Schmidt (Max Greenfield). A one girl to three man ratio may not seem like the best idea in the real world, but in this Emmy Nominated sensation, it is a dream. Hannah Simone and Damon Wayans Jr. also star as Cece and Coach in the series. All the actors give incredible performances.
As an avid comedy viewer, I have found that ‘New Girl’ is one of the only shows that is genuinely funny. Even after watching it one, two, or twenty times, the nautical jokes will still cause you to laugh out loud. One of the best parts of the show is that much of it is improvised. Actor Lamorne Morris noted that about 20 percent of each episode is improvised. During the ‘New Girl’ reunion via Zoom, Jake Johnson spoke about the creative freedom given to the actors while filming and said that the actors were “ allowed to mess with each other and try to make each other laugh because [they] might hit something really funny.” In fact, if you watch really closely in some of the episodes, you may catch some of the actors trying to hold back a laugh. The bits and improvisations made on the show lend to the authenticity.
The ‘New Girl’ cast are actually friends in real life and still keep in touch after the show’s end in 2018. Moreover, Zooey Deshanel, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone launched a podcast called ‘Welcome to Our Show’ where they rewatch each episode and share behind-the-scenes secrets. The podcast, available on Spotify, has featured many guests such as actors Jake Johnson and Justin Long (who plays Paul Genzlinger on the show). If you are obsessed with the comedy series, you should definitely check it out.
If you haven’t started ‘New Girl’ yet, better buy a Hulu subscription! If you are already a ‘New Girl’ fan, dry your tears, because the series will be available on Peacock and Hulu beginning April 17th. Until then, I recommend that you stop doing your homework and devote the next two weeks to watching. If you finish the show yet wish you had completed your book report instead of watching tv, just live by this mantra: “Do I regret it? Yes. Would I do it again? Probably.” -Nick Miller.
