My teachers have been telling me that AI is dangerous and that if you use it, it would be concidered plagiarism, but I don’t see how it can be that bad–my English and journalism teacher Mr. Bowne tells us to use it as a tool.
I agree yes coming from a student this isn’t very shocking that I am mentioning to use it as a tool, but I see the different sides of it. I don’t see the “let’s write our entire English essay based on someone else’s work,” or “let me type in my topic and have chat GPT come up with my entire essay.”
The way I see it is as an editor, as a source of creativity, and as an idea generator, there’s been many times that I’ve written an article in my journalism class where I struggle to come up with a title. Sometimes, my titles are very amateur and I feel like a lot of my readers don’t understand how important, entertaining, or funny my article might be if they’re getting a mediocre title.
I believe that ChatGPT or AI can be used as a source rather than as an enemy. Just the other day, I was in my journalism class talking to Mr. Bowne (my journalism teacher,) he was going on another one of his tangents, just going on a spree of words, but during that time, he said something that was very valuable to me. He told me that ChatGPT can be used as a learning tool, and I’ve learned that overtime.
They’re going to be teachers that tell you that AI is a cheat mechanism and that it’s going to ruin the world of education, but didn’t they used to say that about Google when it first came out? Now using google is a part of our everyday life.
While thinking about the two possible sides of the situation, yes obviously chatGPT or AI can be used in harmful ways to students and their education, such as using it to write entire essay and you know a student slaps their name on it and calls their own, but for me personally, I love writing so much that I can never see myself plagiarizing anything. I can understand how teachers would assume that students would do that anyways. I think that the administration should be thinking more about it in a way of using it as a source and a tool and really valuing it that way.
While I believe AI is important, I also think that it can be dangerous. We don’t know much about AI right now since it just became super popular, and it is smart to stay cautious. Please refrain from sending your personal information into any AI website and make sure you watch out for fake websites.
