As someone who considers themselves a music connoisseur, I love Spotify Wrapped. I look forward to it every year. Of course I know I can just check stats apps, and it’ll tell me all the information, but it’s ten times more fun to get it at the same time as all your friends. This year Spotify Wrapped came out on November 29th. I was in Spanish class when I saw people posting about it on Snapchat. When I checked, I saw my Wrapped was ready for yet another year.
The first slide was a sandwich, letting me know all of the genres I listened to over this year. I listened to fifty four different genres. Some of them include pop, rock, and alt-z. As for minutes, I was listening for 74,055 in total. Which according to Spotify is fifty one days non stop — and I listened the most on June 13th. Snapchat memories told me nothing overly special happened that day, so I’m still trying to figure out why I listened for 652 minutes.
Then I found out that I streamed 2,490 songs over the course of the year, and my top track of the year was “Love & War in Your Twenties” by Jordy Searcy. I was a bit surprised by this. I genuinely thought my top track would be “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” by Tame Impala. However, none of Tame Impalas’ songs were in my top five. Instead, number one again was “Love & War in Your Twenties,” two was “making the bed” by Olivia Rodrigo, third is “Maybelline” by Grant McManus, fourth is “I Wish You Would (Taylor’s Version)” by Taylor Swift, and lastly my fifth most streamed song was “handgun” by Jake Minch.
Finding out that I listened to 1,075 different artists was wild. For the fourth year in a row my top artist was none other than Taylor Swift. I was in the .5% and spent 14,993 minutes listening to her songs. As I said previously my fourth top song was “I Wish You Would (Taylor’s Version)” but that was also my most streamed song by Swift.
Now let’s talk about my top five artists. Of course I just said Taylor Swift was number one. This year Spotify shared your “peak listening month” for a specific artist. For Swift, it was October. Coming in second, Tame Impala did make an appearance and my peak month for him was November. Third we have none other than Gracie Abrams, apparently I listened to her quite a bit in January. Fourth is 5 Seconds of Summer, and I listened to them a lot in August. That makes sense since I saw them in concert that month. Lastly, number five, Noah Kahan. I listened to him a lot in June (maybe that’s what I was listening to on June 13th).
One of my favorite parts of Spotify Wrapped is the “artist thank you,” when artists make a short video just thanking fans for listening to them. I find it to be so sweet and wholesome.
Every year Spotify Wrapped gives you a title. Last year I got “The Voyager,” (I found that one funny). This year I, along with a few of my friends, were given “Time Traveler.” The description for this one reads “you travel back in time and listen to songs on repeat, again and again,” which is very accurate.
In case you couldn’t tell I really enjoy Spotify Wrapped. Maybe it’s because of my love for making playlists for people or maybe it’s just how much I enjoy music. However, I do not enjoy the constant fear that theater tunes will end up in my top five (didn’t happen this year though!). Some people’s favorite day is Christmas or their birthday, for me it’s Spotify Wrapped day.
