Don’t miss the good ABC show, “The Good Doctor”
A new medical drama called The Good Doctor aired on ABC on September 25, 2017. The series follows Surgeon Shaun Murphy and the various patients he encounters at St. Bonaventure Hospital in San Jose, California.
Shaun is an autistic surgeon who has Savant syndrome- a medical condition that consists of a person excelling in an ability beyond normally possible- in this case to recall medical topics by envisioning anatomical diagrams.
The season begins with Shaun Murphy saving a life of a little boy who had glass shattered on top of him at an airport. It is clear from the start that the producers incorporated traits and provide occasional flashbacks to Shaun’s childhood that define Shaun as different.
The show sheds insight on the life of a high functioning autistic doctor and teaches the viewers what the condition entails. It also portrays the obstacles that a disability may play in a demanding career such as medicine in regards to getting individuals to look past their condition and take them seriously.
The Good Doctor was created by David Shore, a Canadian writer who developed the TV shows: House and Battle Creek. Another known figure, Freddie Highmore, from the TV series Bates Motel where he played the lead character Norman Bates, switches things up in his role as main character Shaun Murphy. With a total of 13 episodes in season 1 on ABC the show is already getting an abundance of viewers making the freshman medical drama the most-watched program of the night reaching 18.2 million viewers, Laura Bradley from Vanity Fair wrote.
Although the show is enjoyable to watch, but could be refined in future seasons. Improvements could be made by adding color and development of relationships in regards to the show’s supporting characters, “It needs to be more than a medical drama with a gimmick. It needs more from its supporting characters and stories,” USA Today’s Kelly Lawler wrote.
Despite receiving a 44% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, the audience score was significantly higher at 88%.
With a mix of good and bad reviews the overall quality and plot line of the story is intriguing and unique.
