Kali Uchis, or Karly Marina Loaiza, is a popular latin singer. She is well known for her viral song, Telepatía. Ever since she blew up on multiple social media platforms, she did not fail to deliver plenty of catchy songs. Her new album, Orquídeas, came out on January 12th, 2024. The word, orquídeas, means orchid in Spanish. The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and Loaiza is a Colombian-American. Nonetheless, It was a great album to bring into the new year.
As a person who enjoys listening to latin music in general, I couldn’t help but listen to it the day it got released. I recall playing the new album on my speaker while cleaning, and it was the best thing that I had listened to so far this year.
Personally, the song I have on loop is the last song in the album, ‘Dame Beso // Muévete’ which precisely translates to “give me a kiss, move.”
Some singles that were released before the full album made its debut were Muñekita and Te Mata. Muñekita includes popular rappers such as JT from City Girls and the well known Dominican rapper El Alfa. Before I even knew that Orquídeas was going to come out, I had listened to Muñekita religiously. I enjoyed listening to the upbeat song near the end of the summer of 2023. Muñekita was released on August 4th in 2023.
Te Mata, the second single released before the album, is a song that essentially talks about her freedom. The name literally means “it kills you.” One line that spoke out to me was “No vivo en el pasado.” which translates to “I don’t live in the past.” Te mata is definitely in my top three out of all fourteen songs.
Orquídeas is an album that contains beautiful songs with heartfelt meanings. Although I don’t speak Spanish, I still enjoy the way her voice flows so smoothly in each and every one of her songs. I urge you to listen to a couple songs in this album. You might enjoy the Virginia-born Colombian artist.
