She’s the daughter of film director J.J. Abrams. She went from performing in garages to opening for Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour. She’s on the Forbes 30 under 30 list. She was nominated for the ‘Social Star Award’ in the IHeartRadio Music Awards. She was nominated for ‘Best New Artist’ at the Grammys. She attended the 2024 Met Gala. She’s Gracie Abrams.
Google describes Abrams as an American singer-songwriter, which is true, but she’s so much more than that. She’s released two E.P.s, “Minor” and “This Is What It Feels Like” and she has one album “Good Riddance”. On June twenty-first, her sophomore album “The Secret Of Us” is coming out.
In 2020 “Minor”, Abrams’ first E.P. was released. It’s composed of seven, heartbreakingly beautiful, songs. If you attended The Eras Tour, you may know the song “21” and the “21 chant”. My favorite from the E.P. is “Long Sleeves”.
“This Is What It Feels Like” is the second E.P. came out in 2021 and has twelve songs on it. “Feels Like” was my top song of 2022. My favorite track is either “Feels Like” or “Camden”. It was the first E.P. and piece of music I truly listened to by Abrams so this one means a lot.
Most recently we have the 2023 album “Good Riddance”. This album means so much to me. This was the first album that came out since becoming a fan. Like all of her other works, this album features beautiful but heartbreaking songs. My favorite is “The Blue” or “Best”.
On May first, Abrams released the first single of the new album, “Risk”. The song is an unreleased track leaked years ago, and was already a fan favorite. Unlike her other songs, the vibes of this one are very feel-good, hopeless romantic, love-sick teenager. Audrey Hobert directed the music video. Gracie Abrams’ best friend, who was given a shout out in the song “21”. “Audrey said she saw you out past twelve-o-clock.”
Speaking of best friends, if you’re a fan of Abrams, you know Abby Waisler. Waisler shot the cover for the album, as she photographs everything for Abrams. There’s also the unreleased called “Abby”. Every year on Thanksgiving Gracies team puts out the song on a limited edition vinyl. The song is about friendship and being grateful for the relationships you have. Says the line “I’m really grateful that I get to know you.” I predict this song will be on the album.
In case you haven’t noticed, this album is one for the unreleased. Which leads me to talk about the Target exclusive vinyl. And I get how you may get confused with that topic jump, but stay with me. Target released a photo of what the exclusive vinyl will look like. It’s pink. But they included a sticker that said “including tracks such as “Risk” and “Close To You””. “Close To You”, like “Risk” is a leaked unreleased track that fans having been waiting for for years.
Now since we’re talking about all these unreleased songs that will probably be on the album. I think it’s time to talk about my favorite unreleased that I really want on this album. This song is called “In Between”. Abrams wrote it when she was fifteen and she sums it up as being a very hopeless romantic, love-sick teenager. So if you like “Risk” you’ll like this. Also if you’re a fan of the book “Better Than The Movies” by Lynn Painter, listen to this song. It feels like Wes and Liz’s relationship. The track also has a few Taylor Swift references. “There’s holy ground beneath them and sparks fly when they kiss.” Abrams sings in the second verse. That’s funny because Abrams started out just being a little Swiftie writing songs, and now she opened for Swift on The Eras Tour and is good friends with the singer.
It’s not hard to see that Gracie Abrams is one of my favorite singers. She has a way with words and is always so relatable. She brushed off being a nepo baby and made a name for herself. I am bouncing off the walls waiting for June twenty-first. I cannot wait to see the other twelve tracks, the merch, the music videos, all of it.
