At the end of the last school year, I wrote an article about everything you need to know about Gracie Abrams before her sophomore album came out. Since then, the album came out, Abrams did the first leg of her tour, and she put on the deluxe version of the album. Due to this I’ve become a pretty predictable person, because all I talk about is Gracie Abrams.
Now I’d be more surprised then not if at least one track from The Secret Of Us isn’t on my Spotify Wrapped this year. Just this week I’ve listened to “Let It Happen” 86 times, that’s telling. For the past few years, Abrams has been my second most streamed artist, following close behind Taylor Swift, and I will be utterly shocked if that changes this year.
I was lucky enough to attend “The Secret Of Us Tour.” I went to the Philadelphia show on October 15th, closing night, and incredible is an understatement. Abrams puts on a show like we’re all friends.
At the show she played the at the time unreleased song “That’s So True.” That Friday ,October 18th, Abrams officially dropped that song along with three other new songs and three live recordings from the tour. The songs are called “Cool”, “Packing It Up”, “That’s So True” and “I Told You Things.” Then, the live recordings are “I Love You, I’m Sorry”, “I Knew It, I Know You” and “Free Now.”
Throughout the album Abrams goes through every emotion. “Blowing Smoke” is a good example of anger because in the song Abrams sings the line “if she’s gotta pulse she meets your standards now.” That line is telling and when the song first came out fans were shocked by Abrams sudden aggression. Another example is “Let It Happen” which is the complete opposite of “Blowing Smoke.” This song is my favorite from the album but also very hopeless romantic teenager with the line “just for you I let it happen.”
The deluxe songs are the same way. “Cool” is definitely the most angry track. Abrams is singing about how you are so cool and think you can’t do anything wrong. Then there’s “I Told You Things” and that’s about deep regret. The first line of the song is “I told you things that I never said. You’re the golden boy and my worst regret.”
“Packing It Up” is absolutely my favorite song of the deluxe tracks. It’s very hopeless romantic, just like “Let It Happen.” If you couldn’t tell, I am a hopeless romantic. “That’s So True” is a fan favorite. This is the song that was added to the tour setlist before Abrams actually released it. Despite the upbeat tune the song is actually very sad if you listen to the lyrics.
Gracie Abrams has grown so much as an artist over the last two years and proud doesn’t even begin to describe this feeling. Her lyrics are so unapologetically her.
