The left-wing hypocrisy on the First Amendment
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”.
Surely, Hossein Derakhshan and Claire Wardle, the alt-left, and liberals know this.
Hossein Derakhshan and Claire Wardle collaborated in an article for CNN titled “Ban the term ‘fake news’”. They described the origins of fake news, its international use, and how the term “oversimplifies a complex problem”. They made the strong claim that everyone needs to re-think their vocabulary. Proposition to ban the terms is irrational because it would violate the Constitution. Society today clutches onto the First Amendment, the freedom of speech in particular, for dear life. Liberals love their freedom of speech and know their First Amendment rights more than they know manners. It’s hilarious when they attack someone with different opinions and try to ban terms they don’t like.
Liberals exercise this right to the fullest when throwing derogatory terms towards other races, whites in particular, while preaching that it’s their right. To them, free speech rights go out the window when their opposition expresses their opinions.
A prominent example is Black Lives Matter. On one side of the spectrum, mostly left-wing Americans stood up for blacks and fought against police brutality. On the other side, people saw that the black population had gained an increasingly strong distaste for white Americans. Today’s politics aside, a sense of superiority ariseswhen any group or race of people become racist towards another. Let Hitler serve as a reminder. This applies to everybody, not just whites. People defended themselves against reverse racism and shouted “white lives matter” or “all lives matter.” Except, according to society, there is a huge difference between the left-wing and right-wing protests. The liberals protest for minorities, whereas those defending white lives and all lives were labeled as white supremacists and racists. To me it is quite uncertain what makes the two different. If black lives matter then why don’t other lives matter too?
The First Amendment was deemed applicable strictly to liberals at UC- Berkeley, the campus that birthed the Free Speech Movement. They scheduled conservative Milo Yiannopoulos to speak on campus in February. Protesters wore black scarves over their faces (a true symbol of their strength), threw fireworks at the building he was to speak in, tore down barricades, set fires, and smashed windows. The perpetrators included Antifa members and students. Yiannopoulos wrote on Facebook that night, “One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down”. Damages totaled roughly $100,000.
An article titles “Unmasking the leftist Antifa movement” published to CNN reported in an interview that the goal of Antifa is peace and inclusivity. Antifa admitted their willingness to physically attack anyone who condones racism in order to “eradicate hatred.” The left-wing and alt-left follows a rationale that uses hatred to limit another person’s freedom of speech, while exercising their First Amendment rights, to eradicate hatred by using violence. The public has seen Antifa members attack anyone who disagrees with their beliefs. They stoop so low as to throw water on, and almost violently attack, a disabled veteran. 14 Antifa members were arrested this July after attacking police officers with explosives and bricks. Their ideas of peaceful protesting include property destruction, attacks on those with opposing beliefs, and outright hatred.
Political correctness has become a major issue intertwined with the use of the First Amendment. For instance, it’s not politically correct to describe someone as black, even though it’s acceptable to describe a white person as such. If we are supposed to call black people African Americans, than why don’t people call whites caucasians? Bottom line, you can’t protest for free speech while trying to revoke it. It’s time for people to grow up. When will this madness end?
