Boys Volleyball records another 20 win season
The Eastern Boys Volleyball team is on track for another successful season with a record of 17-5.
Coach Thomas Armour coaches of the team and has been coaching for 23 years. Coach Armour couldn’t pick out his single favorite coaching memory from over the years, but really enjoys looking back on “all of the players that have made our program what it is– successful.”
Seniors Anthony Luliano, Josh Gershenfeld, Andy Thomas, Sahil Patel, and Eddie Taufer do a fantastic job of leading and teaching the younger players. “I do my best to keep everyone’s head up no matter what. If someone makes a mistake, I tell them to forget about it and make up for it with the next play. If someone does something good I support them and tell them to keep it up. I just think keeping positivity on the court is one of the most important things in any sport really,” said Luliano.
Luliano is having what many consider a great season with over 240 kills. He remembers receiving his first varsity letter as a sophomore at Eastern. “I had worked my hardest all year and to see it finally pay off meant a lot to me,” said Luliano on receiving his first varsity letter.
Along with the five seniors, juniors Dylan Quinn, Isaac Sklar, and Gur Jinder Singh have helped the team to success this year. Two of the team’s starters, Jacob O’Connell and Tyler Morgan, are in their first year of volleyball. The two are basketball players, who have stepped up and performed well on the volleyball court. “They’re both very athletic, quick learners, and our coaching staff and senior leadership has done a great job accelerating their progress,” said Gershenfeld.
Strong chemistry guides the team. “We’ve been playing together for a while and have great chemistry…As well as playing for the school team, a bunch of us play club volleyball together in the winter so that helps a lot,” said Gershenfeld.
Coach Armour added that the team has “mutual respect” for each other and is “able to bond together under stress.”
Last year, the Eastern Boy’s Volleyball team lost in the South Jersey Semifinals, but they have bigger plans this year.
Both Luliano and Gershenfeld have the same goal for the team this year — to get to the South Jersey Finals and square off against Southern, who is known to be the best team around. Hopefully, the team can make a run and get a shot at victory in the finals.
