Dillon Lamon

Dillon Lamon holds a white perch, caught on the Great Egg Harbor River from the Sodbanks. “I’m mostly a self-taught fisherman,” he said, “learning from YouTube and the collection of fishing relationships over recent years.”

If you went around and asked students what they did during their free time, some would say that they play sports, others would say that they make Tik Toks, and one might even say that they go on nature walks to marvel what Earth has to offer.

Junior Dillon Lamon admits that he spends his time doing something out of the norm: fishing.

As a toddler, he fished with his grandfather, now having fished for over a decade.

Lamon goes fishing every week, all across New Jersey. One day, he hopes to fish in New Zealand or Canada, because of their rare species of fish that he describes as “gnarly.”

Lamon never has the same fishing trip twice, but normally fishes for around four hours.

“I cannot describe a typical fishing trip outside the fact that it typically involves adventuring to new locations,” Lamon said.

Lamon sees fishing as a “fun and rewarding hobby” that he cannot imagine living without. He explained that there is a certain euphoria when he catches a fish, especially when it is of the rare species.

“It’s kind of like that feeling you have when you hit a home run in baseball or you get a good grade on a test you studied hard for,” Lamon said.

Lamon shares his love of fising with a wide audience on his YouTube channel, where he uses the pseudonym Dillon L. Fishing.” Created in the summer of 2017, Dillon L. Fishing features videos about fishing excursions and fishing tips that could be of great help for any fisherman looking to learn all there is to know about fishing. He has 845 subscribers.

“I am trying to appeal towards an audience that fish regularly by making videos about my fishing experience,” said Lamon.

Lamon’s channel has amassed a following of around 800 subscribers, and he wants to continue with it for as long as possible.

“Not sure what’s in store for the future of Dillon L. Fishing; just gonna keep uploading and let it rip. I just plan to keep doing the same thing. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Lamon said.

When asked if he planned to keep on fishing after high school, Lamon offered an answer with no hesitation.

“I will obviously keep fishing after high school, ‘til I die, because I love it too much,” Lamon said.

So, while some kids will continue to do Tik Tok challenges, Lamon will continue to fish to his heart’s desire.
