This seems like a dream, but it is really a nightmare

Mr. Bowne

In the year 2020, it is essential work to be online, promoting and engaging with people. If not, you will be a nobody.

It’s unprecedented. Never in a million years could I imagine the world practically being shut down. Yet, here I sit, at my desk, doing school.

Considering the way things were headed late last week, I am not surprised by the decision to close schools and move to remote learning. When the news broke, I was kind of interested to see how remote schooling would go. The concept was intriguing.

However, the early returns are not great. To be fair to the school, they had only a week to devise a plan. But this remote learning is not good. Some teachers are able to handle it with video lectures, and other creative ways to have a discussion.

Other teachers meanwhile, are just uploading a silly ten minute assignment that kids quickly complete and go back to bed.

I understand it is challenging, so I guess I will just deal with it.

Another thing that has been on my mind is the social aspect of school. By no means am I a very social person, but I miss not being in school. You don’t realize it until your sitting at your desk by yourself, with hours upon hours of free time.

Part of being at school is seeing and interacting with people. At home, you see the same few people everyday.

But what I find to be the strangest aspect of this all is that this seems like a kids dream. All you ever hear is how much kids dread waking up early, and spending 7 hours in school.

They dread doing the work in school, then coming home to another few hours of homework. Then on top of the school work, lots of kids have jobs to factor into the time management plan.

If you asked a kid during normal times, doing four hours of  remote learning at home, waking up at 8:00 am ( an hour and a half later for most people), less work, less rigor, and more time to watch Netflix, go on social media, or play video games, they would say that sounds awesome.

Then why is it that lots of people are dissatisfied right now? And we’re only a few days into this, we have a minimum of a week and half left if not more left.

I think as a result of this, kids will have a much greater appreciation for school. They will appreciate interacting with other people on a daily basis. They will appreciate challenging themselves. And most importantly they will appreciate simply leaving the house each day and having something to do.
