Which is better? Spotify or Apple Music

So during the quarantine . . .

Sean Vankhook, a sophomore, has used both applications but enjoys the layout of Spotify Music more. “I use Apple Music currently,” he said, “but I used to use Spotify…both have good qualities especially with layout, but I prefer Spotify.”

It’s Coke vs. Pepsi. It’s the Yankees vs. the Red Sox.

It’s also Spotify vs Apple Music.

Both users defend the apps to the death. Both music applications offer great features, but the question remains:

   Who does it better?

Spotify has great algorithms, daily mixes, and recommendations. Most people use it and have tons of playlists waiting to be shared.

The daily playlists and new suggested music every week are based on your listening history and related artists. Plus, users can see what other listeners are listening to.

People who used to use Spotify and have switched to Apple have said that the sound quality is noticeably worse on Spotify. It also destroys the phone battery, where Apple Music is much more power efficient.

Even the music charts are significantly different for both apps. Apple Music is heavily dominated by hip hop listeners and the charts are usually dominated with album tracks while Pop fans chart singles on Spotify.

And if a pop song is in the Top 50 on Apple Music and Top 5 in Spotify, that song is smashing.

Jordan Gunter, a sophomore, said he likes Apple Music “because it gives good suggestions plus you can find friends easier… plus good playlist options.”

There is a larger load of listeners on Spotify mostly because the app is available for free if you don’t want a premium account. People are able to listen without a subscription, which makes Apple Music not as widely used.

Kelsey Barratt, class of 22’, said Spotify Music “is easier to use mostly because of the price, free.”

For every Apple link, there are dozens of Spotify ones. The lack of free option on Apple’s side is a big factor.

“I prefer Apple Music,” said sophomore Raelyn Smith. “You can read the lyrics as the song plays.” Listeners can search a lyric and all the songs with that word show up.

Spotify does not offer lyrics to every song, but some appear for artists who have worked with Spotify for their releases. This is a feature that might not phase the user or be seen as a very important factor in using the app.

Sean Vankhook, a sophomore, has used both applications but enjoys the layout of Spotify Music more. “I use Apple Music currently,” he said, “but I used to use Spotify…both have good qualities especially with layout, but I prefer Spotify.”

Parker Adamic said likes Apple Music because there is 3D Touch and users can access a lot of different things though it which I like. “It’s just way more simple to navigate thru rather than Spotify,” he said.

Most students seem to favor of Spotify due to the pricing, but those who have purchased Apple Music would never switch to Spotify.

Both offer free trials and are user friendly. You can decide for yourself which you like better and if you are willing to pay for the services
