Ew David! Why Schitt’s Creek Is So Talked About And Loved

The comedy includes an absolutely absurd wardrobe, great lgbtq representation, and has an amazing family aspect (on and off the show).

Funny moments mixed in with sentimental family ones create a comforting atmosphere that is loved and cherished by many.

“I could not be more at one with nature. I do Coachella every year.” – David Rose.

“I didn’t go missing, David. The FBI knew where I was the entire time!”— Alexis Rose

Hilarious lines like these catapulted Canadian show Schitt’s Creek into one of America and Canada’s most adored sitcoms, and for good reason. The show centers around a rich family who loses all their money and is forced to reside in a poor, run down town that they bought as a joke years ago, called Schitt’s Creek. The comedy includes an absolutely absurd wardrobe, great lgbtq representation, and has an amazing family aspect (on and off the show).

Best of all, you don’t have to take my word for it; Schitts Creek won 9 Emmys in 2020, so my words of praise must be shared by others too!

Ridiculous outfits

Viewers are very well accustomed to the incredible wardrobe on this show.

Especially the wardrobe of Moira Rose; she seems to have a new wig for every episode and extravagant outfit as well. All of her wigs are named, and even seem to have personalities (“Maureen Does Not Like To Be Manhandled”).

David, too, is often seen wearing sweaters with every print imaginable, from lightning bolts, leopard print, and even one that reads “nonchalance.”

Johnny Rose is always wearing a pristine suit, despite his jobs often being non-professional.

Alexis Rose is so fashionable that she even makes her vet scrubs look stylish by cutting them. She did eventually need sleeves on her scrubs, but it didn’t take away from her look.

LGTBQ+ relationships and characters

Queer characters in shows tend to go through some “struggle,” whether it be homophobia or really bad relationship issues, before they can be happy, either with their identity or relationship.

However, one of my favorite parts about Schitt’s Creek is the fact that queer characters, the main one being David, can simply just be, in a world with no homophobia or sexual identity crisis.

David is pansexual, which isn’t displayed in the media all that much. There are still funny lines around David’s sexuaility, none being homophobic. My favorite is by the sleazy town mayor Roland. Johnny says “My son is pansexual,” for Roland to reply with, “I know what that is. That’s umm, that cookware fetish.”

Family-Run Show

The importance of family is strongly shown through the run of the show. Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis learn how to express their love for one another and how to not be so dependent on money.

Each member of the Rose family is hilarious in their own way, however, my two favorites have to be David and Moira. David is just too relatable in his unzealous outlook on life, and when Moira said “David, stop acting like a disgruntled pelican!”, she became a favorite of mine as well.

The television show was made by father son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, and they play Johnny and David on the show, which even further reiterates the aspect of family on and off the screen.

Schitts Creek outshines many sitcoms seen today. Funny moments mixed in with sentimental family ones create a comforting atmosphere that is loved and cherished by many.

        Best Wishes, Warmest Regards,

A very passionate Schitt’s Creek fan
