Eastern Welcomes: Mr. Patton

“I love to inspire curiosity,” said Mr. Schuyler Patton, the new chemistry teacher. Prior to Eastern, he taught at Central High School in Philadelphia.

Born in Virginia, Mr. Patton’s father served in the military. Therefore, Mr. Patton traveled a lot. He has lived in Japan, Georgia, and Ohio.

Much of where he spent his growing up was in Madison, Indiana from 5th grade onward. Here, he attended Madison High School. Later, he attended college at Bucknell University for material science and chemical engineering.

Following his time at Bucknell, Mr. Patton continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania for his masters degree in chemistry education. Following college, he managed his own pub and restaurant. He met his wife and now has three kids named Fiona who is 9, Ansley who is going to be 7, and Campbell who is 4.

In his free time he likes to coach his daughter’s soccer teams, long board, hatchet throw, golf, and cook. Now going on his 13th year of teaching, he has taught material science, chemical engineering, food science, physics, and chemistry.

But while he is a chemistry teacher, not all of his experiments have gone as planned. Once, while teaching chemistry, he was experimenting with pure sodium samples and the substance shot out of the container and stuck to the ceiling which caused some ceiling damage!

But that was the past and now he’s ready to take on Eastern.

So far, he says the staff and students have been treating him well. He thinks Eastern is an awesome school.

“I plan to stay here long if the staff lets me,” he said.
