Open Letter to “Speedy”
You ran as fast as your legs could take you. And that was it. The moment I knew!
Dear Speedy,
From my fifth Christmas to the first day of my senior year, you’ve been with me through it all. I would like to thank you for your never ending presence in my life.
I remember the first day we met. It was the end of December in 2010. My parents and I picked you up from the animal
orphanage in North Jersey.
“What should we name him?” my mom stated. I looked at her curiously.
“I don’t know,” I replied.
I was completely lost, in terms of what name best fit you, my new found best friend. You were a small white and chocolate brown Jack Russell Terrier. Your tail was short, your ears were long, and your snout seemed to go on for a mile.
As my dad swung into the driveway of my childhood home, I immediately jumped out of my seat and ran towards the door. I wanted you to see your new home and explore our backyard. You immediately started running as soon as I put you down in our backyard.
You ran as fast as your legs could take you.
And that was it. The moment I knew.
“Speedy. His name is Speedy!”
From that moment on, you became a permanent fixture in my life. My childhood to now teenage best friend. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me about responsibility, friendship, companionship, and most importantly, love.
With all my love,
Sydney
