Open Letter to Balenciaga

Your clothing consists of shoes that look like socks, crocs with heels, and oversized clothing that ranges from $1000-$8000. You could make these outfits at home, or just buy clothing that is 20 times larger than your normal size.

With such high prices, why is the clothing of Balenciaga so unsightly?

Dear Balenciaga,

You truly confuse me.

I have some complaints about most of the items in your catalog. If I’m being honest, I don’t think anyone would buy the items you have for sale.  This is why our generation is the downfall of humanity. I don’t understand who you are trying to satisfy with such horrendous items. A person with a higher standing who has the money would definitely not buy them.

Truly, they look disgusting. Please explain this to me.

I am distraught as to what this company has become. Cristóbal Balenciaga himself would be disappointed to see that this is what his brand has come to. If I were a person of high wealth, I wouldn’t want to buy something that is purposely dirty.

Although most of the clothing items I am talking about are out of the sale, it still doesn’t hide the fact that you’re making something ugly. Don’t you feel embarrassed? You’re known for being expensive, which can be good. However, your clothing consists of shoes that look like socks, crocs with heels, and oversized clothing that ranges from $1000-$8000. You could make these outfits at home, or just buy clothing that is 20 times larger than your normal size.

Yes, there is some decent stuff in your catalog, such as your sneakers, which I would probably buy. But other than that, your clothing is not good at all. This generation is going to be the downfall of humanity because your company is bringing shame and dishonor to it.

Expensive products usually come off to people as elegant, or ethereal. Your products are the farthest thing from that. In the future, I hope our generation and the next will fix your company.

After researching multiple reviews and articles about your bags and clothes, I have come to the understanding that people who are able to afford your clothing also dislike your design ideas. Now, if I were to work at Balenciaga, I would listen to the customers’ reviews to fix whatever went wrong.  You still throw out more items that are unsightly, such as your $2000 destroyed shoes.

Ever since I was a child, I believed that your brand was something that people get once in a lifetime, and clothing that no one else could get their hands on. That might’ve been true back then, but in 2022, I don’t think your understanding of fashion trends is accurate. I would like to talk to the person working in your design department.

Maybe I’m not understanding what fashion is up to now because I’m still a teenager. What would I know? But then again, if so many people online are bashing your clothing, then there must be a problem.

If I’m going to be completely transparent, I’m not a customer of Balenciaga. You have every right to think that this letter is complete tomfoolery. Nonetheless, my opinions will never change.

Cristóbal Balenciaga was a fashion designer who was extremely talented and renowned in his field of work. I understand that fashion trends go and come very quickly, but if I were to consider Balenciaga a high fashion brand, I think it would need some concepts from Cristóbal’s time.

Others may consider your clothing as high-end fashion because that is what the trend is now.  I understand that you won’t take criticism from someone who has never bought anything from your company but listen to your customers. If your clothing is expensive, let them buy something they’ll enjoy. Some people will buy anything because of its brand name. So, let those people love and savor what they purchase.

Yours sincerely, Janah Hassan
