Apple Pie vs Pumpkin Pie

Fall is pie season, and what two pies are better suited for fall than apple pie and pumpkin pie?  Fall lovers look forward to pie every fall, but the debate between apple and pumpkin pie has yet to be resolved.

In regards to health, pumpkin pie is less caloric than apple pie.  It is high in fiber and vitamin A.  Pumpkin pie is constructed with only a bottom layer of crust whereas apple pie has a top layer which contributes to pumpkin pie containing less calories.  Apples themselves are low-calorie, but the heavy sugar, butter, and double crust cancels out any nutritional value.

However, when it comes to dessert, not many people are focused on which one is healthier since they both are packed with sugar.  The main difference between the two pies is the filling style.  Pumpkin pie has a puree filling whereas apple pie has a loose apple filling.  The creamy filling of pumpkin pie adds to its appeal along with the spice combination of ground ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon that dances on your tongue.  The taste of pumpkin screams autumn and it is the heart of the season.  Apple pie provides an entirely different sensation.  The filling is more crisp and juicy compared to the creaminess of pumpkin pie.  The buttery crunch and warmth of apple pie pairs perfectly with ice cream whereas pumpkin pie goes best with whipped cream.  Apple pie is also more of an all-year-round treat.  While pumpkin pie is associated with fall and typically is not eaten during any other season, apple pie is not only enjoyed during fall.  It is also an American delicacy consumed at American holidays throughout the year.

Personally, my favorite is pumpkin pie.  The fact that I only get to eat it during autumn makes me look forward to it every year.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder after all.  Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge apple pie fan.  The sweet yet spice-filled delight is a favorite at all my family gatherings.  However, when my fork glides through the smooth filling of pumpkin pie I feel comforted.  Pumpkin pie completes the fall season perfectly.
