Dear seven-year-old Kaitlin,
How are you? This is you, from the future. Ten years, to be exact. That’s right, the same age as Dove Cameron from Liv and Maddie! Cool, right?
How did you get this letter, you may be wondering?
Don’t even worry about it.
Anyways, how’s second grade going? I remember that being a fun year—you have a lot to look forward to! I’ll tell you a bit about myself. I’m in my senior year of high school! I’m on the executive board of my school’s news magazine, and I’ve written over fifty articles. I’m also the co-president of the book club, a reporter for our school news, the editor of our Poetry Out Loud club, and an officer of Interact. I have a lot of great friends who are always there for me. We recently saw the new Barbie movie for my birthday and it was AMAZING!!! Whoops, future spoilers. But things are going really well!
While I’m here, I’ll give you a few words of advice, learned over my seventeen years.
- Things change. Sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worse. A lot is going to happen this year and beyond that will drastically change your day-to-day life. People come and go like the seasons, and that is completely okay. Just appreciate each day and each moment for what it is. You never know if you’ll have another one quite like it.
- Stay true to yourself. You are such a kind soul, Kait, and a lot of people envy that. They will try to knock you down, take advantage of your good heart, but you can’t let them. Keep your head up high, and
- remember what Grandmom and Pop-Pop always tell you. It’s nice to be nice, and do what everybody else does, but do it better. I know you will make both of them so proud. You already have.
- As Walt Disney once said (remember? His quote was in Meet The Robinsons), “keep moving forward”. No matter what happens, no matter how hard it gets, you have the power to keep on going. You are a confident, intelligent, and graceful young woman and I know you have the capability to get through whatever life throws at you. After all, you’re talking to you, ten years in the future! I’ve gotten through it all, and I’m still standing. And so are you. Go us!
I’m so proud of you, Kait. You’re doing so great and I hope you know that. Keep shining bright, reading and writing and working hard and being the awesome person I know you are! Keep moving forward, stay true to yourself, and don’t forget to have fun! You’re only seven once, you know. Have a great year in second grade and I’ll see you soon!
Love,
Kaitlin Swift
