Women in political positions, like cabinet members and  heads of government or state, are slowly calculating higher in number. Despite this, there is still gender inequality in political life.  These milestones, like many other achievements by women, aren’t recognized. But this has recently shifted due to 2024’s election, which brought a lot of attention to the role women play in government with America’s second ever woman to run in the  presidential election. 

  Kamala Harris didn’t employ her gender or race  to headline  her campaign, but prioritized her ideas and hopes for America. Kamala Harris gave lots of speeches to the younger future generation of America and promised to unify the nation, while unquestionably defending the women of the country. Kamala wanted to address gender inequality in America alongside the other issues, stating “Eleanor Roosevelt, who shaped the universal declaration on human rights once said, ‘Without equality there can be no democracy.’ In other words, the status of women is the status of democracy.”  Kamala also spoke against Trump’s abortion laws, which Michelle Obama also refuted by saying “I am asking y’all from the core of my being to take our lives seriously, please do not put our lives in the hands of politicians, mostly men, who have no clue.” 

   With Kamala losing the election, things may be looking down for women right now—especially with higher risks of infant mortality, death of blood loss, infections, miscarriages, and possibly less doctors in women’s  health due to  threat of arrest. Nevertheless, Kamala’s Harris campaign brought attention to not just women in America, but women worldwide. The concept of having to deal with gender inequality as a woman because “that’s the way the world is” has been shifted. Women have been fighting for equality since the beginning of time but, as Kamala brought to light, “Sometimes the fight takes a while. That doesn’t mean we won’t win. The important thing is that you don’t ever give up!” The fight for full gender equality is not over, but with enough effort is possible.
