The 80’s and 90’s are making a comeback in the fashion world

The ‘80’s and ‘90s are back. At least in fashion.

What’s in? Dr. Marten boots, leggings, high waisted acid wash denim jeans, Vans, t-shirts with name brands, and scrunchies, to name just a few.

According to fashion teacher Mrs. Heyers, an influential component of the resurface of past trends from these decades consists of people watching new and old television shows such as Friends, Stranger Things, and Full House. “Stranger Things is like the current Goonies,” said Mrs. Heyers.

Along with social media platforms, celebrities such as Bella and Gigi Hadid have had a substantial influence on bringing back the 1980’s and 1990’s trends with their personal style.

“It used to be fashion shows predicted what we wore, now it’s Instagram, bloggers, and social media that influences what we wear,” said Mrs. Heyers.

Stores like H&M, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, and Target are taking part in these new, but old trends. Along with stores, some brands such as Converse, Vans, Marc Jacobs, Dr. Martens, and Tommy Hilfiger are showing a more retro appearance.

Why do people want to revisit some of the trends from these decades?

Edmund Peach, general manager of the Banana Republic store on Walnut Street in Philadelphia, said that it is mainly because of nostalgia. People attach sentiment to garments and they want to revisit the good old times. Shoppers that have lived through the 80’s and or the 90’s are more apt to buy a piece of clothing if it brings up memories of their youthful days.

“It reminds you of the good times,” Peach said. “You appreciate the quirkiness or whimsicalness of it.”

According to Peach, even younger generations that did not live through these time periods want the throwback and vintage style it emanates. On the design side of things, designers try to see if they can bring back something from 20 or 30 years ago and see if people will buy it.

For Spring of 2018, “designers are caving to the pull of workwear-meets-nostalgic fitness gear,” Ana Colon from “Glamour” magazine wrote.

As trends from the 1980’s and 1990’s are resurfacing, they are not designed exactly as the clothing from these decades— they are, “modern takes on classic styles, with accents of pops of color,” Peach said.

The 1980’s also arrives at Eastern with the production Rock of Ages. Isabella Vincenzes, a cast member, said that there will be lots of edgy clothes, men in wigs, and classic 80’s hairbands.

Isabella Vincenzes was sporting an orange flannel button down top with a blue cropped shirt underneath, and black leggings topped with maroon Vans. She wears a lot of retro looking clothing and takes “inspiration from the 70’s through 90’s quite often.”
