The general consensus among fans of the character Venom is that “Spiderman 3” (2007) did him a massive disservice and didn’t give him the spotlight he deserved. “Venom” (2018) attempts to reimagine one of Spider-man’s most memorable villains and give him the storyline he deserves on screen.

Venom isn’t just Eddie Brock (the man infected by Venom) or a blob of black goo. The movie does a great job of showing Venom’s parasitical relationship with his host and that they are seperate people in the same body. This relationship really carries the movie, but that’s because everything else is really mediocre and boring.

To start, this movie should have been R rated. When you go in to the theatre to watch this movie you can tell some of the action scenes were supposed to be bloodbaths that were cut for appropriateness in the editing room.

This is a slap in the face to the fans hoping to see Venom and his counter symbiote, Riot, making a gory mess in the action scenes they were given. Venom isn’t short on violence. There are just scenes where you’re sitting there asking yourself, “Where is all the blood?”

The villain, Carlton Drake, is just an evil Elon Musk. That’s pretty much the whole depth of his character.

They try to give him the proper motivation every antagonist should have, but it’s bare bones. “I like space. I want to live in space. Lets abuse poor people because they’re stupid.”

He’s just a preachy, annoying, rich guy. You can plug-in any cliche evil corporate man as the main villain and the movie wouldn’t change at all.

It takes way too long for Venom and Eddie Brock to combine into one being, making the first half hour of the movie boring. Every character needs a background and motivation, but it seems to drag on for way too long and doesn’t give Venom enough screen time. Eddie Brock is a funny character, but Venom is THE BEST character in the film.

“Venom” wasn’t absolutley dissapointing, especially if you’re looking for a fun superhero movie. Venom is the perfect mix of gritty action and comedy.

Venom is great compared to the disappointing “Amazing Spider Man” movies. However, I left the theatre feeling like it could have been so much more entertaining and thrilling than it already was.
