The Couch Critic

The best part of awards season is sitting at home on your couch while judging celebrities’ red carpet looks, knowing you’ll never be where they are. So far, celebrities from across the nation have walked the carpet at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards

For the Golden Globes, Ana de Armas, Scarlett Johansson, and Zoë Kravitz won the carpet. Armas shined in a strapless, shining blue Ralph and Russo gown. Johansson went with a bold, red Vera Wang gown with a massive train and plunging neckline. Kravtiz by far won most chic in Yves Saint Laurent. The red lip stood out against the black and white dress, making it —-.

Contrary to popular belief, I thought Margot Robbie looked great in a Chanel gown with a beaded bodice and white skirt. However, I do agree with the worst dressed being Gwyneth Paltrow in Fendi. I’m sorry, but everything about i was bad – the color, the sheer, ruffles, the necklace (worn under the gown?) – just why? Jennifer lopez was also a major letdown in Valentino Couture with a bigger-than-life bow on the front. Many commented that it looked like a giant Christmas present.

She may have disappointed at the Golden Globes, but J.Lo had a comeback at the Critics’ Choice Awards. She looked amazing in a simple, yet elegant, Georges Hobeika gown. It may be my favorite look of awards season so far. I think everyone can agree that they want to be Zendaya. She looked insane in a Tom Ford futuristic two-piece straight off the Spring 2020 runway. Lupita Nyong’o kept it simple in a brown Michael Kors gown with a thin, gold belt. Joining my best dressed list, Nicole Kidman stunned in a strapless black Armani Privé lace gown.

There was no Christmas dress like the Golden Globes, but I thought Saoirse Ronan’s Erdem looked a bit like a curtain, even though she made almost all other best dressed lists. Kristen Bell stood out in a neon green Cong Tri pantsuit. I normally wouldn’t minded it, but the cape ruined it for me. In a teal Valentino gown with glittering gloves, Janet Mock’s look was a big miss. One Twitter user turned it into a meme with the caption, “My dentist coming over to ask me why I haven’t flossed in two years.”

With awards season only just getting started, there will be plenty more red carpet looks to judge and critique from the safety of your own house. The Oscars will air on February 9, and fashion-critiquing your favorite celebrities is always the perfect Sunday night activity.
