With its debut episode airing in April 2017, Every Little Thing, or ELT for short, has been answering all of life’s burning questions for some time now. Viewers submit their inquiries by calling the ELT Help Line (answering machine) or sending an audio message to their email address, with a few lucky winners featured on each episode.

As a frequent podcaster myself, discovering Every Little Thing was a pleasant surprise. Over the time that I’ve listened to the show, I can’t even count all of the things that I’ve learned about. Having this new knowledge in my brain will make my own commentary more diversified and interesting to listen to.

The name doesn’t lie.

If you’ve ever wanted to know something, Gimlet Media’s Every Little Thing has likely already addressed it. From the origins of the limbo dance to the rise and fall of cargo shorts, no question goes unanswered.

The reasons behind the show’s success aren’t hard to fathom. Managing editor and host Flora Lichtman offers captivating commentary backed by a silky-smooth voice; arguably one of the most important keys to a successful podcast. This, coupled with top-notch storytelling and a seemingly-endless grab bag of episode topics, creates a winning formula that ELT has followed up to the present day.

Currently, the ELT Twitter page has amassed over 6,000 followers, and that number stands to increase over the next year’s time. Gimlet Media is a subsidiary of Spotify, allowing for the show to be marketed through advertisements to its 147 million free users. In fact, that’s how they first came to my attention.

On a dreary March morning, I had just returned from a distance running workout, and engaged in my usual post-run routine: jam out to my favorite Spotify playlist. As the third song came to a close, and I had thought of my prediction for the fourth, I couldn’t contain my excitement. Sadly, I think all Spotify Free users can tell where this is going.

An ad, thoroughly unwelcome in my musical paradise, began to blast out of my stereo speakers. Except this time, it wasn’t your usual obnoxious Spotify spiel. It was Every Little Thing, and it piqued my interest from the start.

As I browsed through the extensive catalog of episodes, I truly began to realize the massive scale of the podcast. For over three years, ELT episodes have aired on an average of once every week to two weeks, leaving over 100 thought-provoking adventures at my disposal.

Looking for a place to start, I scanned the list for something that caught my eye. First up was the August 19th, 2019 episode “How to Get Rid of an Earworm.” As the title suggests, Lichtman helps a worried guest, who can’t seem to get the Justin Timberlake/Chris Stapleton single “Say Something” out of her mind.

Because music is one of my favorite interests in life, the nearly thirty-minute episode went by in the blink of an eye. Already hooked, I fell down the ELT rabbit hole, but that’s not to say I was complaining. Since then, the show has become a staple of my daily routine.

People with inquisitive minds will instantly love ELT, because there is truly something for everyone. Don’t like an episode? That’s quite alright.

There are dozens and dozens more, waiting to be listened to.

One of my favorite aspects of podcasting is the open-endedness of it, and ELT takes that idea and runs with it.
