Black Models in the Fashion Industry
Seeing runway models with different skin complexions delivers a message of how beauty is represented by diversity.
The fashion industry is one of the most important aspects of representation because of its ability to shape the self expressions of people in society. When thinking of fashion, the first things that come to mind are designs of clothing, modeling, and creation of new and modernized “looks.” But, fashion is so much more than that.
It is a reflection of the people in society, their opinions, and the way they choose to represent themselves whether it’s through culture, life experiences, or standing up for a movement of change.
Through a designer’s clothing or the way a model approaches advertising a new look, a personal insight into one’s character, emotion and individuality can be recognized. This is exactly what has been brought out by several Black models and designers as they have worked to diversify the fashion industry and show that different looks and designs are worthy of acceptance and success.

Several Black models in the industry have spoken out against racism and inequality and have taken a stance on what equality and acceptance means to them. One of these models being Naomi Campbell, who is an icon in the modeling industry. According to Style Caster, she has fought for racial equality and has persevered through harsh experiences of discrimination. Despite being bombarded by racist remarks and challenges, she still managed to find success through following her passion. Her charity Fashion For Relief is a reflection of her grit and determination. Through this charity and the raising of over fifteen million dollars, there has been a huge promotion of sustainability and awareness for the environment. She has also modeled for various brands like Versace, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton.
Getting a big break in the modeling and fashion industry is a success within itself, but being able to take that success and turn it into something greater is where change happens. That is exactly what Campell and many other influential Black models have done through speaking against discrimination and racism.
Though not spoken about often enough, the prominence of Black, male models in the fashion industry has evolved over the past few years and has shown the increase in diverse models. One of these models being Alton Mason, who was the first Black male to do a runway walk for Chanel.
Mason said, “It’s definitely hard for a male model to stand out but it’s twice as hard as a Black male model because you have to almost double the work to make an impression. There’s a lot you got to do and I feel like the one thing you have to start with is making sure your mental health is good.”
Being Black in the fashion and modeling industry has broken several barriers as people have learned to accept different images of beauty. With that being said, being both Black and male as a fashion model is a challenge in itself. It goes to show how the world is not limited by a single “beauty standard” and how increasing diversity means increasing acceptance in fashion and, importantly, in the real world.
As younger generations begin to see diversity in the style of their role models, it will pave the way for a new understanding of how humans feel about themselves and others.
Black model Broderick Hunter had also faced racism in the modeling industry but used his struggles to create new ambition in his career. He said, “I was in Italy for the first time. I had booked [a major fashion show]. But then six hours before the show, I got released and they replaced me with a white boy.” Thirty years ago. Ten years ago. Today. Racism is still evident and has taken away the dreams of many young, talented Black individuals. Despite these challenges, there have been many models like Hunter who have overcome these hardships and have persevered for a big break. When he was casted for a major music video, it was a reflection of how his ambition had outweighed discrimination from others.
Black individuals have had major difficulties to overcome in regards to racism and discrimination. With that being said, it is through their passion and perseverance that we can see the way racism has changed the world and impacted the lives of countless people of color. These Black models convey how the fashion industry is an outlet for stereotypes to be eliminated and a way for Black individuals to show that beauty is not defined by skin color.
