Mr. Bowne

Despite the sports drought, journalists have done their very best to continue to report whatever sports information is available and contribute to allowing people to have a part of their lives kept normal.

In an instant, the entire sports world was turned upside down due to the erotic, continuous spread of the Coronavirus, now a global pandemic sweeping throughout the world. A sequence of moves occured as schools were cancelled, workers being asked to work from home, and a banning of a certain number of people together in one area. Now, even sports icons like Lebron James that we often evision as immortal have been affected and quarantined like the rest of us. Now, we’ll have to wait at the very minimum a few months before we can witness the much anticipated matchup between the Lakers and Clippers in the Battle of Los Angeles as well as a multitude of sports events across the globe.

On March 11, 2020 I had been going about my usual routine, watching my New York Knicks go up against the sophomore sensation, all star Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks in a nailbiter overtime game. The game ended in a close Knicks victory but surprisingly, this was the least astonishing moment of the night. Shortly after, the NBA season would change in a stunning turn of events never seen before.

Scrolling through Instagram, I had come across a video that had displayed the Thunder and Jazz game being suddenly interrupted by medical doctors and referees, asking the game to be stopped. Minutes later, Jazz Center Rudy Gobert was announced to have the virus. Instantly, games were shut down for the night and the teams were set into quarantine to be tested as well. The next day, commissioner Adam Silver announced an indefinite suspension in the NBA, bringing the exciting season to a halt.

Adam Silver’s quick decision making to place the NBA on a hiatus, began  a domino effect of action as the remaining leagues followed. The National Football League stopped its annual draft workouts while the XFL suspended its season indefinitely. Additionally, soccer leagues across the world were cancelled as well.

Every day became increasingly different as even sports talk shows such as First Take and Undisputed, had turned their attention towards the virus as it was the largest topic in the world with no relevant news to discuss in the sports world.

Days later, the NFL Free Agency began and the sports world once again had something to talk about. In one of the biggest free agency moves in history, Tom Brady left the Patriots to become the new starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Moves around the NFL surfaced and starving fans were given something to entertain themselves during this sports drought.

I was astonished by the sudden change of events in our world, as a week ago what seemed as a meme and joke on social media had quickly become an issue affecting us in a multitude of ways, causing life-changing events outside our control. As a high school senior, I look forward to the nation returning to a state of normalcy, where we each can return to our daily routine in a healthy, safe environment for everyone.
